 "ONE such time was about the year 3000 BC, when quite suddenly civilisation appeared, not only in Egypt and Mesopotamia but in the Indus valley; another was in the late sixth century BC, when there was not only the miracle of Ionia and Greece - philosophy, science, art, poetry, all reaching a point that wasn't reached again for 2000 years - but also in India a spiritual enlightment that has perhaps never been equalled. Another was round about the year 1 100. It seems to have affected the whole world; but its strongest and most dramatic effect was in Western Europe - where it was most needed. It was like a Russian spring."~~~Kenneth Clark. Civilisation. Ch. 2 The Great Thaw

"WHEN CHRISTIANITY WAS ABOUT TWELVE HUNDRED YEARS old, religious leaders sought a tighter structuring of holy orders, and in 1209 the Italian Francis of Assisi started what became the Franciscans, an order of subtle appeal. It stressed celibacy, poverty, profound devotion and a love of humanity. Its members, like all members of the mendicant orders, were known as friars and they did not live in fixed abodes or monasteries; they traveled endlessly, built missions, performed good deeds, and provided examples of humility.
The Franciscans found Mexico a dramatic theater for their operations, and if the Indians of that country escaped formal slavery, it was due in great part to the humanitarian efforts of the Franciscans; if the Indians acquired certain limited blessings of Spanish civilization, it was because brave Franciscans established missions on the remote frontier. They were teachers, hospital attendants, farmers and understanding friends, but primarily they were servants of Jesus Christ."~~~James A. Michener: TEXAS. Ch 2 The Mission

Angkor Wat ("City/Capital of Temples") is a temple complex in Cambodia, located on a site measuring 162.6 hectares (1,626,000 m2; 402 acres).
Most of the visible areas are sandstone blocks, while laterite was used for the outer wall and hidden structural parts.
This sandstone was transported from Mount Kulen, a quarry approximately 40 kilometres (25 mi) northeast.
The monument was made of five to ten million sandstone blocks with a maximum weight of 1.5 tons each.
The entire city of Angkor used far greater amounts of stone than all the Egyptian pyramids combined .
The Guinness World Records considers it as the largest religious structure in the world.
Originally constructed as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu for the Khmer Empire by King Suryavarman II during the 12th century, it was gradually transformed into a Buddhist temple towards the end of the century; as such, it is also described as a "Hindu-Buddhist" temple.

Virginia ham is a variety of heavily salted ham preserved by curing and smoking, associated with the cuisine of the Southern United States. It is a specialty ham known as a “country ham” with origins in Virginia. Country hams are salt-cured (with or without nitrites) for one to three months. They are usually hardwood smoked (usually hickory and red oak), but some types of country ham, such as the “salt-and-pepper ham” of North Carolina, are not smoked. Virginia-style ham typically refers to hams that are not necessarily made in the state, but are cured and smoked in the traditional way, no matter the geographic location. The main difference between Virginia ham and Virginia-style ham lies in where the ham is produced and adherence to traditional methods. If you’re looking for the most authentic Virginia ham, be sure to check where the ham was produced before purchasing

The Village Blacksmith

Under a spreading chestnut-tree
     The village smithy stands;
The smith, a mighty man is he,
     With large and sinewy hands,
And the muscles of his brawny arms
     Are strong as iron bands.

His hair is crisp, and black, and long;
     His face is like the tan;
His brow is wet with honest sweat,
     He earns whate'er he can,
And looks the whole world in the face,
     For he owes not any man.

Week in, week out, from morn till night,
     You can hear his bellows blow;
You can hear him swing his heavy sledge,
     With measured beat and slow,
Like a sexton ringing the village bell,
     When the evening sun is low.

And children coming home from school
     Look in at the open door;
They love to see the flaming forge,
     And hear the bellows roar,
And catch the burning sparks that fly
     Like chaff from a threshing-floor.

He goes on Sunday to the church,
     And sits among his boys;
He hears the parson pray and preach,
     He hears his daughter's voice
Singing in the village choir,
     And it makes his heart rejoice.

It sounds to him like her mother's voice
     Singing in Paradise!
He needs must think of her once more,
     How in the grave she lies;
And with his hard, rough hand he wipes
     A tear out of his eyes.

Toiling,—rejoicing,—sorrowing,
     Onward through life he goes;
Each morning sees some task begin,
     Each evening sees it close;
Something attempted, something done,
     Has earned a night's repose.

Thanks, thanks to thee, my worthy friend,
     For the lesson thou hast taught!
Thus at the flaming forge of life
     Our fortunes must be wrought;
Thus on its sounding anvil shaped
     Each burning deed and thought.

John King of the San Francisco Chronicle summed up the improved opinion of the building in 2009 as "an architectural icon of the best sort – one that fits its location and gets better with age." King also wrote in 2011 that it is "a uniquely memorable building, a triumph of the unexpected, unreal and engaging all at once. ... It is a presence and a persona, snapping into different focus with every fresh angle, every shift in
