The Chimera on a red-figureApulian plate, c. 350–340 BC (Musée du Louvre)
The Chimera, also Chimaera; Greek:Χίμαιρα, Chímaira) was, according to Greek mythology, a monstrous fire-breathing hybrid creature of Lycia in Asia Minor, composed of the parts of more than one animal. It is usually depicted as a lion, with the head of a goat arising from its back, and a tail that might end with a snake's head, and was one of the offspring of Typhon and Echidna and a sibling of such monsters asCerberus and the Lernaean Hydra.

The bronze "Chimera of Arezzo" is one of the best known examples of the art of the Etruscans.Court intellectuals of the time considered the Chimera of Arezzo to be a symbol of the Medici domination of the grand duchy. The Chimera is still conserved inFlorence, now in the Archaeological Museum. It is approximately 80 cm in height.

Red-figure plate showing Bellerophon riding Pegasus and chasing the Chimera, second half of the 4th century BCE.
