Although Tutankhumen's tomb was discovered in 1922, the splendour of his treasure only became fully apparent three years later. First the three funerary "chapels" built of gilded cedarwood had to be opened. Then  the heavy lid of the pink granite sarcophagus was lifted revealing two coffins of gold-plated wood, followed by a third coffin of solid gold. Only then did the excavators come face to face with the pharaoh's mask, an astonishing work in polished gold set with multicoloured stones.
