“But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:”
The painting The Monarch of the Glen by Sir Edwin Landseer is currently owned by the National Galleries of Scotland. It was acquired in 2017 after a public campaign and support from organizations like the Heritage Lottery Fund and Art Fund, ensuring that this iconic image of Scottish identity would remain in public hands.
Before that, the painting had been part of the collection of Diageo, the drinks company behind brands like Johnnie Walker and Guinness. Diageo agreed to sell the painting to the National Galleries for £4 million, significantly below its market value, as a gesture of cultural stewardship.
So now, the stag stands not just in misty Highland grandeur, but in the halls of the Scottish National Gallery, where it continues to inspire reverence, reflection, and symbolic meditation.
