Kenneth Clark: Civilisation: Ch 8 The Light of Experience

“When Berckheyde painted his picture of the square at Haarlem [136] he appears to have seen almost exactly what we see, if we stand there today at about three o'clock on a sunny afternoon with the wind from the north- west. The architecture is relatively little changed, the sense of space is what we have come to regard as normal, the light is accurately observed. We feel that we could walk into that picture. Nothing strange in that; but like so many things we take for granted, it goes back to a revolutionary change in thought - the revolution that replaced Divine Authority by experience, experiment and observation."
