THE dream of cities with streets of gold that lured Spanish adventurers to the New World in the early 16th century lives on in the Spanish phrase "Vale un Perù," which has the idiomatic meaning of "Worth the world." For it was in the Viceroyalty of Peru (present-day Peru and Bolivia) that the fantasy of treasure beyond measure was most memorably realized.
