Leighton’s emphasis on color and form aligns Flaming June with Aestheticism, a movement that promoted the idea that a work of art could concern itself exclusively with harmony and beauty and need not convey a narrative or deeper meaning. Such was Leighton’s confidence in the power of his conception that he presented it largely without a storyline or symbolic embellishments. The scene has almost no implied action and few props; although the setting and the woman’s robes evoke ancient Greece and Rome, no detail marks a specific time or place. Possum Kingdom Lake (popularly known as P.K.), is a reservoir on the Brazos River located primarily in Palo Pinto County Texas.

The Brazos River, called the Río de los Brazos de Dios (translated as "The River of the Arms of God") by early Spanish explorers, is the 14th-longest river in the United States
