Prov.1:32
"For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them"
“We have come a long way from the powerful conviction that induced
knights and ladies to draw carts of Stone up the hill for the building of
Chartres Cathedral. And yet the notion of ideal love, and the irresistible
power of gentleness and beauty, which is emblematically conveyed by the homage
of these two fierce beasts, can be traced back for three centuries; we may even
begin to look for it in the north portal of Chartres.”~~~ Kenneth Clark:

Ivory statuette of Virgin and Child in the Gothic style
This is an ivory panel relief representing two Maries at the Sepulchre,
made in ca. 1320 in France, Paris. Shortly after its discovery this
ivory relief was associated with four other reliefs from the Passion,
all of similar dimensions, but being the work of more than one sculptor
and having originated from a number of different ensembles. The present
relief seems to have been cut down at the bottom
“People have suggested that the graceful curve of a
Gothic Virgin was due to the curve of the elephant’s tusk out of which it was
carved. Not impossible: but
this flowing rhythm spread far beyond material necessities. In the ivory
plaque of the Maries at the Sepulchre the figures have
a musical relationship to one another.” ~~~ Kenneth Clark:
