Valley of Fire State Park

Valley of Fire State Park is the oldest state park in Nevada, USA. It covers an area of 34,880 acres (14,120 ha) and was dedicated in 1935. It derives its name from red sandstone formations, formed from great shifting sand dunes during the age of dinosaurs. These features, which are the centerpiece of the park's attractions, often appear to be on fire when reflecting the sun's rays.
Valley of Fire is located 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Las Vegas, at an elevation between 2,000–2,600 feet (610–790 m). It abuts the Lake Mead National Recreation Area at the Virgin River confluence. It lies in a 4 by 6 mi (6.4 by 9.7 km) basin.
Complex uplifting and faulting of the region, followed by extensive erosion, have created the present landscape. The rough floor and jagged walls of the park contain brilliant formations of eroded sandstone and sand dunes more than 150 million years old. Other important rock formations include limestones, shales, and conglomerates.
The park entry from Interstate 15 passes through the Moapa Indian Reservation. The park has a visitor center that should be visited by anyone planning any off-road activities.

Obviously, to sigh and cry over the abominations of Israel,we have to know what sin is and what God considers abominable. The apostle John tells us that "sin is the transgression of the law" (I John 3:4). InRomans 3:20, Paul instructs us that "by the law is the knowledge of sin." In Romans 7:7, he reflects that he "would not have known sin except through the law." So we must know God's lawin order to identify sin properly.

CHESTERTON: A Second Childhood

Edgar Allan Poe escribió cuentos de puro horror fantástico o de pura bizarrerie; Edgar Allan Poe fueinventor del cuento policial. Ello no es menos indudable que el hecho de que no combinó los dos géneros.No impuso al caballero Auguste Dupin la tarea de fijar el antiguo crimen del Hombre de las Multitudes o deexplicar el simulacro que fulminó, en la cámara negra y escarlata, al enmascarado príncipe Próspero. Encambio, Chesterton prodigó con pasión y felicidad esos tours de force. Cada una de las piezas de la Saga delPadre Brown presenta un misterio, propone explicaciones de tipo demoníaco o mágico y las reemplaza, alfin, con otras que son de este mundo. La maestría no agota la virtud de esas breves ficciones; en ellas creopercibir una cifra de la historia de Chesterton, un símbolo o espejo de Chesterton. La repetición de suesquema a través de los años y de los libros (The Man who Knew Too Much, The Poet and the Lunatics,The Paradoxes of Mr. Pond) parece confirmar que se trata de una forma esencial, no de un artificio retórico.Estos apuntes quieren interpretar esa forma.Antes, conviene reconsiderar unos hechos de excesiva notoriedad. Chesterton fue católico, Chestertoncreyó en la Edad Media de los prerrafaelistas (Of London, small and white, and clean), Chesterton pensó,como Whitman, que el mero hecho de ser es tan prodigioso que ninguna desventura debe eximirnos de una suerte de cómica gratitud. Tales creencias pueden ser justas, pero el interés que promueven es limitado;suponer que agotan a Chesterton es olvidar que un credo es el último término de una serie de procesosmentales y emocionales y que un hombre es toda la serie. En este país, los católicos exaltan a Chesterton, loslibrepensadores lo niegan. Como todo escritor que profesa un credo, Chesterton es juzgado por él, esreprobado o aclamado por él. Su caso es parecido al de Kipling, a quien siempre lo juzgan en función delImperio Británico.Poe y Baudelaire se propusieron, como elatormentado Urizen de Blake, la creación de un mundo deespanto; es natural que su obra sea pródiga de formas del horror. Chesterton, me parece, no hubiera toleradola imputación de ser un tejedor de pesadillas, un monstrorum artifex (Plinio, XXVIII, 2), peroinvenciblemente suele incurrir en atisbos atroces. Pregunta si acaso un hombre tiene tres ojos, o un pájarotres alas; habla, contra los panteístas, de un muerto que descubre en el paraíso; que los espíritus de los corosangélicos tienen sin fin su misma cara

; habla de una cárcel de espejos; habla de un laberinto sin centro;habla de un hombre devorado por autómatas de metal; habla de un árbol que devora a los pájaros y que enlugar de hojas da plumas; imagina (The Man who was Thursday, VI) que en los confines orientales delmundo acaso existe un árbol que ya es más, y menos, que un árbol, y en los occidentales, algo, una torre,cuya sola arquitectura es malvada. Define lo cercano por lo lejano, y aun por lo atroz; si habla de sus ojos,los llama con palabras de Ezequiel (1: 22) un terrible cristal, si de la noche, perfecciona un antiguo horror(Apocalipsis, 4: 6) y la llama un monstruo hecho de ojos. No menos ilustrativa es la narración How I foundthe Superman. Chesterton habla con los padres del Superhombre; interrogados sobre la hermosura del hijo,que no sale de un cuarto oscuro, éstos le recuerdan que el Superhombre crea su propio canon y debe sermedido por él («En ese plano es más bello que Apolo. Desde nuestro plano inferior, por supuesto...»);después admiten que no es fácil estrecharle la mano («Usted comprende; la estructura es muy otra»);después, son incapaces de precisar si tiene pelo o plumas. Una corriente de aire lo mata y unos hombresretiran un ataúd que no es de forma humana. Chesterton refiere en tono de burla esa fantasía teratológica.Tales ejemplos, que sería fácil multiplicar, prueban que Chesterton se defendió de ser Edgar Allan Poe

Amplificando un pensamiento de Attar («En todas partes sólo vemos Tu cara»), Jalal-uddin Rumi compusounos versos que ha traducido Rückert ( Werke, IV, 222), donde se dice que en los cielos, en el mar y en lossueños hay Uno Solo y donde se alaba a ese Único por haber reducido a unidad los cuatro briosos animalesque tiran delcarro de los mundos: la tierra, el fuego, el aire y el agua.

Emblemas de esa guerra son para mí las aventurasdel Padre Brown, cada una de las cuales quiere explicar, mediante la sola razón, un hecho inexplicable

. Por eso dije, en el párrafo inicial de esta nota, que esas ficciones eran cifras de la historia de Chesterton,símbolos y espejos de Chesterton. Eso es todo, salvo que la «razón» a la que Chesterton supeditó susimaginaciones no era precisamente la razón, sino la fe católica, o sea, un conjunto de imaginaciones hebreas supeditadas a Platón y a Aristóteles.Recuerdo dos parábolas que se oponen. La primera consta en el primer tomo de las obras de Kafka. Esla historia del hombre que pide ser admitido a la ley. El guardián de la primera puerta le dice que adentrohay muchas otras

y que no hay sala que no esté custodiada por un guardián, cada uno más fuerte que elanterior. El hombre se sienta a esperar. Pasan los días y los años, y el hombre muere. En la agonía pregunta:«Será posible que en los años que espero nadie haya querido entrar sino yo?». El guardián le responde:«Nadie ha querido entrar porque a ti sólo estaba destinada esta puerta. Ahora voy a cerrarla». (Kafkacomenta esta parábola, complicándola aún más, en el noveno capítulo de El proceso.) La otra parábola estáen el Pilgrim's Progress, de Bunyan. La gente mira codiciosa un castillo que custodian muchos guerreros; enla puerta hay un guardián con un libro para escribir el nombre de aquel que sea digno de entrar. Un hombreintrépido se allega a ese guardián y le dice: «Anote mi nombre, señor». Luego saca la espada y se arrojasobre los guerreros y recibe y devuelve heridas sangrientas, hasta abrirse camino entre el fragor y entrar en el castillo.Chesterton dedicó su vida a escribir la segunda de las parábolas, pero algo en él propendió siempre aescribir la primera

Dicen (lo cual es improbable) que la historia fue referida por Eduardo, el menor de los Nelson, en el velorio de Cristian, el mayor, que fallecio de muerte natural, hacia mil ochocientos noventa y tantos, en el partido de Moran. Lo cierto es que alguien la oyó de alguien, en el decurso de esa larga noche perdida, entre mate y mate, y la repitio a Santiago Dabove, por quien la supe. Años despues, volvieron a contarmela en Turdera, donde habia acontecido. La segunda version, algo mas prolija, confirmaba en suma la de Santiago, con las pequeñas variaciones y divergencias que son del caso. La escribo ahora porque en ella se cifra, si no me engaño, un breve y tragico cristal de la indole de los orilleros antiguos. Lo hare con probidad, pero ya preveo que cedere a la tentacion acute;n literaria de acentuar o agregar algun pormenor.

En Turdera los llamaban los Nilsen. El parroco me dijo que su predecesor recordaba, no sin sorpresa, haber visto en la casa de esa gente una gastada Biblia de tapas negras, con caracteres góticos; en las ulltimas paginas entrevió nombres y fechas manuscritas. Era el unico libro que habia en la casa. La azarosa crónica de los Nilsen, perdida como todo se perdera. El caserón, que ya no existe, era de ladrillo sin revocar; desde el zaguan se divisaban un patio de baldosa colorada y otro de tierra. Pocos, por lo demas, entraron ahi; los Nilsen defendian su soledad. En las habitaciones desmanteladas dormieron en catres; sus lujos eran el caballo, el apero, la daga de hoja corta, el atuendo rumboso de los sabados y el alcohol pendenciero. Se que eran altos, de melena rojiza. Dinamarca o Irlanda, de las que nunca oirian hablar, anda ban por la sangre de esos dos criollos. El barrio los temia a los Colorados; no es imposible que debieran alguna muerte. Hombro a hombro pelearon una vez a la policia. Se dice que el menor tuvo un altercado con Juan Iberra, en el que no llevó la peor parte, lo cual, segun los entendidos, es mucho. Fueron troperos, cuarteadores, cuatreros y alguna vez tahures. Tenian fama de avaros, salvo cuando la bebida y el juego los volvian generosos. De sus deudos nada se sabe ni de dónde vinieron. Eran dueños de una carreta y una yunta de bueyes.

Fisicamente diferian del compadraje que dio su apodo forajido a la Costa Brava. Esto, y lo que ignoramos, ayuda a comprender lo unidos que fueron. Mal quistarse con uno era contar con dos enemigos.

Los Nilsen eran calaveras, pero sus episodios amorosos habian sido hasta entonces de zaguan o de casa mala. No faltaron, pues, comentarios cuando Cristian llevó a vivir con Juliana Burgos. Es verdad que ganaba asi una sirvienta, pero no es menos cierto que la colmó de horrendas baratijas y que la lucia en las fiestas. En las pobres fiestas de conventillo, donde la quebrada y el corte estaban pro hibidos y donde se bailaba, todavia, con mucha luz. Juliana era de tez morena y de ojos rasgados, bastaba que alguien la mirara para que se sonriera. En un barrio modesto, donde el trabajo y el desculdo gastan a las mujeres, no era mal parecida.

Eduardo los acompañaba al principio. Despues emprendió un viaje a Arrecifes por no se que negocio; a su vuelta llevó a la casa una muchacha, que habia levantado por el camino, y a los pocos dias la echó. Se hizo mas hosco; se emborrachaba solo en el almacen y no se daba con nadie. Estaba enamorado de la mujer de Cristian. El barrio, que tal vez lo supo antes que el, previ con alevosa alegria la riva lidad latente de los hermanos.

Una noche, al volver tarde de la esquina, Eduardo vio el oscuro de Cnstian atado al palenque. En el patio, el mayor estaba esperandolo con sus mejores pilchas. La mujer iba y venia con el mate en la mano. Cristian le dijo a Eduardo: -Yo me voy a una farra en lo de Farias. Ahi la tenes a la Juliana; si la queres, usala.

El tono era entre mandón y cordial. Eduardo se quedó un tiempo mirand olo; no sabia que hacer Cristian se levantó, se despidió de Eduardo, no de Juliana, que era una cosa, montó a caballo y se fue al trote, sin apuro.

Desde aquella noche la compartieron. Nadie sabra los p ormenores de esa sórdida unión, que ultrajaba las decencias del arrabal. El arreglo anduvo bien por unas semanas, pero no podia durar. Entre ellos, los hermanos no pronunciaban el nombre de Juliana, nl siquiera para llamarla, pero bus caban, y encontraban, razones para no estar de acuerdo. Discutian la venta de unos cueros, pero lo que discutian era otra cosa. Cristian solia alzar la voz y Eduardo callaba. Sin saberlo, estaban celandose. En el duro su burbio, un hombre no decia, ni se decia, que una mujer pudiera importarle, mas alla del deseo y la posesión, pero los dos estaban enamorados. Esto, de algun modo, los humillaba.

Una tarde, en la plaza de Lomas , Eduardo se cruzó con Juan Iberra, que lo felicitó por ese primor que se habia agenciado. Fue entonces, creo, que Eduardo lo injil rió. Nadie, delante de el, iba a hacer burla de Cristian.

La mujer atendia a los dos con sumisión bestial; pero no podia ocultar alguna preferencia por el menor, que no habia rechazado la participación, pero que no la habia dispuesto.

Un dia, le mandaron a la Juliana que sacara dos sillas al primer patio y que no apareciera por ahi, porque tenian que hablar. Ella esperaba un dialogo largo y se acostó a dormir la siesta, pero al rato la recordaron. Le hicieron llenar una bolsa con todo lo que tenia, sin olvidar el rosario de vidrio y la crucecita que le habia dejado su madre. Sin explicarle nada la subieron a la carreta y emprendieron un silencioso y tedioso viaje. Habia llovido; los caminos estaban muy pesados y serian las cinco de la mañana cuando llegaron a Morón. Ahi la vendieron a la patrona del prostibulo. El trato ya estaba hecho; Cristian cobró la suma y la dividió despues con el otro.

En Turdera, los Nilsen, perdidos hasta entonces en la maraña (que tambien era una rutina) de aquel monstruoso amor, quisieron reanudar su antigua vida de hombres entre hombres. Volvieron a las trucadas, al reñidero, a las juergas casuales. Acaso, alguna vez, se creyeron salvados, pero solian incurrir, cada cual por su lado, en injustificadas o harto justificadas ausencias. Poco antes de iin de año el menor dijo que tenia que hacer en la Capital. Cristian se fue a Moron; en el palenque de la casa que sabemos reconoció al overo de Eduardo. Entró; adentro estaba el otro, esperando turno. Parece que Cristian le dijo: -De seguir asi, los vamos a cansar a los pingos. Mas vale que la tengamos a mano.

Habló con la patrona, sacó unas monedas del tirador y se la llevaron. La Juliana iba con Cristian; Eduardo espoleó al overo para no verlos.

Volvieron a lo que ya se ha dicho. La infame solución habia fracasado; los dos habian cedido a la tentación de hacer trampa. Cain andaba por ahi, pero el cariño entre los Nilsen era muy grande -Áquien sabe que rigores y que peligros habian compartido!- y prefirieron desahogar su exasperación con ajenos. Con un desconocido, con los perros, con la Juliana, que habia traido la discordia.

El mes de marzo estaba por concluir y el calor no cejaba. Un domingo (los domingos la gente suele recogerse temprano) Eduardo, que volvia del almacen, vio que Cristian uncia los bueyes. Cristian le dijo: -Veni; tenemos que dejar unos cueros en lo del Pardo; ya los cargue, aprovechemos la fresca. El comercio del Pardo quedaba, creo, mas al Sur; tomaron por el Camino de las Tropas; despues, por un desvio. El campo iba agrandandose con la noche. Orillaron un pajonal; Cristian tiró el cigarro que habia encendido y dijo sin apuro: -A trabajar, hermano. Despues nos ayudaran los caranchos. Hoy la mate. Que se quede aqui con sus pilchas. Ya no hara mas perjuicios. Se abrazaron, casi llor ando. Ahora los ataba otro vinculo: la mujer tristemente sacrificada y la obligacion de olvidarla.

GoKstad ship

The Gokstad ship is a Viking ship found in a burial mound at Gokstad farm in Sandar, Sandefjord, Vestfold, Norway.

Discovery

The place where the boat was found, situated on arable land, had long been named Gokstadhaugen or Kongshaugen (from the Old Norse words kóngr meaning king and haugr meaning mound), although the relevance of its name had been discounted as folklore, as other sites in Norway bear similar names. Shortly after the 1880 New Year the sons of the owner of Gokstad Farm, having heard of the legends surrounding the site, uncovered the bow of a boat and its painter while digging in the still frozen ground. As word of the find got out, Nicolay Nicolaysen, the then President of the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Norwegian Monuments, reached the site on 6 February 1880 and, having ascertained that the find was indeed that of an ancient artefact, liaised for the digging to be stopped.^[1]
Nicolaysen returned on March 27 and established that the mound still measured 50 metres by 43 metres, although its height had been diminished down to 5 metres by constant years of ploughing. With his team, he began excavating the mound from the side rather than from the top down, and on the second day of digging was surprised to find the bow of a ship.

Construction

The Gokstad ship is clinker-built, constructed largely of oak. The ship was not intended for long voyages but for warfare, trade, and transportation of people and cargo. The ship is 23.24 metres (76.2 ft) long and 5.20 m (17.1 ft) wide. It is the largest in the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. The ship was steered by a quarter rudder fastened to a large block of wood attached to the outside of the hull and supported by an extra stout rib. The block is known as the wart, and is fastened by osiers, knotted on the outside passed through both the rudder and wart to be firmly anchored in the ship.
The ship was built to carry 32 oarsmen, and the oar holes could be hatched down when the ship was under sail. It utilized a square sail of approximately 110 square metres (1,200 sq ft), which, it is estimated, could propel the ship to over 12 knots (22 km/h; 14 mph). The mast could be raised and lowered. While the ship was traveling in shallow water, the rudder could be raised very quickly by undoing the fastening. Dendrochronological dating suggests that the ship was built of timber that was felled around 890 AD. The Gokstad ship was commissioned during the reign of Harald Fairhair at the end of the 9th century. The ship could carry a crew of 40 men but could carry a maximum of 70.^[3]

Towards the end of his life Turing became interested in mathematical biology. He wrote a paper on the chemical basis of morphogenesis,^[4] and he predicted oscillating chemical reactions such as the Belousov–Zhabotinsky reaction, which were first observed in the 1960s.

Se ha hecho frecuente escribir y decir "la presidenta". ¿Es gramatical esta locución? No; según el sistema de los géneros gramaticales, es ajena al idioma castellano. Lo adecuado al sistema es "la presidente".

Ahora diferenciemos lo gramatical de lo social; a veces, ambos campos se separan, y, con el tiempo, uno puede modificar al otro, y viceversa. Así pues, separemos la explicación en 1) el campo gramatical y en 2) el campo social.

En el campo gramatical, la expresión correcta (o propia del sistema) es "la presidente" porque 'presidente' es una palabra que carece de género masculino o femenino. Se dice que corresponde al "género común"; es decir, es común a mujeres y hombres.

Otras palabras similares son 'hablante', 'estudiante', 'saliente', etc. Todas estas palabras terminan en la desinencia '-nte' y son "participios activos" o "participios presentes".

Todos los verbos presentan esa forma: de 'hablar', 'hablante'; de 'salir', 'saliente', etc. Estos participios aluden a la persona, al animal o la cosa que realiza la acción del verbo. Si el verbo es 'oír', quien realiza esta acción es el oyente o la oyente (hombre o mujer, o animal hembra o animal macho). Se dice "participio activo" porque denota acción.

Habría que aclarar algunas palabras terminan en '-nte', pero no son participios activos: 'puente', 'diente', 'elefante', 'atorrante' (argentinismo), etc.

También existen curiosidades, como participios que pasaron solos al castellano y que "dejaron atrás" toda su conjugación; es decir, la conjugación se quedó en el latín, idioma original de tales verbos. Veamos unos casos: 'gerente' (de 'gerere', dirigir, manejar), 'detergente' (de 'detergere', limpiar puliendo), 'ambiente' (de 'ambire', rodear), 'caliente' (de 'calere', calentar), 'suficiente' (de 'sufficere', bastar) y 'cliente' (de 'clinare', inclinarse). El verbo 'videre' dio nuestro infinitivo 'ver' y nuestro participio activo 'vidente'.

Volviendo al género común de los participios activos, recordemos casos usuales: "la Bella Durmiente", "mente pensante", "respuesta cortante", "causa suficiente", etc. Todas estas locuciones incluyen un substantivo femenino y un participio activo común (ni femenino ni masculino) que termina en '-nte'.

Por tanto, lo normal en el sistema español es que la persona que presida sea 'presidente': "el presidente" y "la presidente". No decimos "la durmienta"; entonces, tampoco debemos decir "la presidenta". ¿Escribirá alguien "la presidenta salienta"?

Ahora bien, ¿hay excepciones usuales? Sí, y algunas son muy antiguas, como estas: 'clienta', 'regenta', 'dependienta', 'sirvienta', 'parturienta' (en vez de 'parturiente') e 'infanta' (niña que, por ser muy pequeña, aún no habla). ¿A qué se deben esas excepciones? A la ignorancia.

La mayor parte de la gente no sabe cómo funciona el sistema de los géneros gramaticales, de modo que a algunas personas se les ocurrió que 'sirvienta' es la forma femenina "lógica" de 'sirviente'. Todavía no se atreven con "la Bella Durmienta", pero tal vez se generalice esta novedad.

Decir que la ignorancia es el origen de algunos cambios no es ofensivo porque fue y es la realidad. Un erudito medieval castellano nunca habría dicho "la infanta" (sino "la infante"), pero sí lo decía el pueblo, generalmente analfabeto entonces, y esta forma se extendió y pasó como herencia.

Aquellas formas anormales pasan al uso general y a la literatura, y entran en el Diccionario de la Real Academia Española (DRAE), que ahora tiene la puerta muy ancha.

Detengámonos en el caso de "la presidenta": ¿a qué se debe que una persona use esta locución? A alguna de estas causas:

1. Ignorancia. La persona ignora el sistema de los géneros gramaticales.

2. Indolencia. A la persona le da lo mismo decir "la presidente" que "la presidenta" porque carece de sensibilidad lingüística, pero al final se adecúa (o 'adecua') al uso de los otros.

3. Presión social. La persona se siente intimidada por la condena social que recae sobre el machismo pues se supone que es machista decir "la presidente" (culpa indemostrada e indemostrable).

4. Convicción feminista. La persona cree que es machista decir "la presidente" como cree también que lo es decir "la poetisa" (y dice "la poeta").

Estos cuatro casos (y puede haber más) ya no son propiamente asuntos gramaticales; es decir, ya no atañen al sistema "interno" de un idioma (su conjugación, su forma de crear plurales, su ortografía, etc.).

Aquellos casos pertenecen al dominio de la sociolingüística; o sea, a la disciplina que estudia los factores sociales que influyen en las variaciones de los idiomas según sean las edades, las clases sociales, las épocas, los lugares (región, país, ciudad/campo, etc.), etc. No toda la gente habla de igual modo, y sus variaciones dependen de su edad, su educación, su lugar de residencia, etc.

La sociolingüística no es normativa; es decir, no nos indica qué es correcto o incorrecto en el uso de un idioma. La sociolingüística es descriptiva: explica cómo habla o escribe la gente de tal lugar, las personas de cierta edad, etc.

Así, la sociolingüística es la ciencia indicada para explicarnos por qué ha prosperado una rareza agramatical como "la presidenta". En mi opinión, ha prosperado por los cuatro motivos expresados antes.

¿Debemos emplear la locución "la presidenta"? La respuesta cae en el dominio del gusto personal. Yo nunca digo ni escribo "la presidenta" ni "la poeta" porque me parecen locuciones agramaticales que además no necesito para expresarme con claridad, ni me siento menos feminista por esto. Ejerzo el feminismo desde hace 45 años, o tal vez desde antes sin haberme dado cuenta de ello porque entonces tenía el impulso, pero me faltaban las lecturas.

Pienso que el idioma español es machista por herencia del latín y que debemos mejorarlo en algunos aspectos (por ejemplo, no debemos decir "el hombre" cuando nos refiramos a hombres y a mujeres), pero no me agrada destruir el sistema de los géneros gramaticales con la curiosa desinencia '-nta'. A veces, saber que "así habla la gente" me produce solidaridad y me sumo a ello; otras veces, el uso mayoritario me suscita bostezos.

En todo caso, sea que digamos o no digamos "la presidenta", es importante que tomemos una decisión con conocimiento de causa: sabiendo qué hay detrás de tal rareza.

Podemos estar dentro o fuera del sistema de un idioma, mas es esencial que sepamos cómo funciona. Quien rompe las reglas debe conocerlas antes pues, en el caso contrario, no las rompe, sino que el roto es él porque anda a ciegas tropezando con los muebles del lenguaje.

And the Greenest Country On Earth Is… Um, Wait A Second…

Finding the greenest country on earth isn’t as easy as you might think. And we’re not talking about which country looks the greenest from 30,000 feet. That would be Ireland.

Green enough for ya?

Since my funding request to ThomasNet for an all-expense paid round the world trip to determine once and for all the greenest country on earth seems to have gotten held up somewhere in the bureaucracy, we had to look at the candidates from a bit of a remove.

Now we currently live in what has to be one of the strongest candidates, New Zealand, which prides itself on its green image. This is a country that could pretty well satisfy all domestic power demand with one nuclear reactor, but which in the name of greenness refuses to build that one reactor.

Heck, they still don’t let nuclear-powered ships dock here. Taking that stance scuppered a defense treaty with Australia and the United States, for which the prime minister who did it is still widely regarded as something of a folk hero. Actually that’s not as big a deal as you might think, as New Zealand national military defense is predicated on two assumptions — that if Australia wanted it they would have taken it by now, and the penguins in the Antarctic are happy where they are.

Still, green is a fact of everyday life here. Wind power is big, solar is growing, and there’s scant littering, by my American standards. We have bike lanes in Auckland nobody uses, but we don’t get rid of them even though they’re a pain in the keister for everyone else.

But evidently that doesn’t push New Zealand over the top. So, what is the greenest country on earth?

One Vote for Iceland From… Bin.

Bin’s Corner thinks it’s Iceland. Who’s Bin? Frankly we’re not sure. But he seems fairly confident, and he has cool pictures of his top five — in ascending order Norway, Sweden, Costa Rica, Switzerland and Iceland. That more or less jibes with what we found elsewhere, if he’d had Niger, Russia, Burkina Faso, Romania and Japan, well, we’d pass over that in silence.

Why’s Iceland so green? According to Bin, they’ve cut their dependence on imported coal from 70% of demand to 18%, which is pretty good. Evidently geothermal heat is big there. And it’s cold, so they must know what they’re doing.

Plus Icelanders believe in faeries. Really. That’s gotta count for something when it comes to being green.

Another site notes that 82 percent of Iceland’s “primary energy consumption” comes from renewable sources, presumably geothermal accounts for the lion’s share of that.

According to Yale University, The Winner Is…

Turning to a bit more widely-known authority than Bin, in 2010 Yale University posted the 2010 Environmental Performance Index, which ranks 163 countries on what Yale officials say are “25 performance indicators tracked across ten policy categories covering both environmental public health and ecosystem vitality.” But they don’t have the cool pictures Bin does.

In this more rigorous examination, only four countries make the top echelon, scoring in the 85-100 range: Sweden at 86, Costa Rica at 86.4, Switzerland at 89.1 and Iceland at 93.5, pretty firmly in first place. New Zealand ranks 15th, and there are about 20 other countries in the 70-85 range, including a whole lot of European and Nordic countries and the likes of Mauritius, Panama, Colombia and Malta.

As Yale officials say, these indicators are intended to gauge “at a national government scale” how close countries are to “established environmental policy goals.”

What’s that? Oh, okay, the worst countries, #154 – #163, in order down to rock bottom: Benin, Haiti, Mali, Turkmenistan, Niger, Togo, Angola, Mauritania, Central African Republic and, in last place, Sierra Leone. Which probably doesn’t care a great deal.

Here’s the Reader’s Digest Version: How Livable Is It?

Venerable Reader’s Digest weighs in on the question. They rely on Matthew E. Kahn, Ph. D., and Fran Lostys for their 2007 ranking, which takes into consideration more than just abstract criteria, but actual livability — a pristine, virgin Amazon rainforest is as green as they come, but you can’t live there.

Reader’s Digest’s list, as its authors say, was intent on “finding the perfect balance between what’s green and what’s livable… the world’s greenest countries where people could thrive.” This means they looked at such things as social factors (income, education and others) and environmental measures.

And the winner is… not Iceland! But its neighbor, Finland.

“Top-ranked Finland wins high marks for air and water quality, a low incidence of infant disease, and how well it protects citizens from water pollution and natural disasters,” the study found, adding that even here things could be better: “The country also produces an above-average amount of greenhouse gases, has a large ecological footprint (the mass of land and water needed to sustain the national level of consumption) and contributes significantly to regional environmental woes.”

Iceland does come in second, followed by Norway, Sweden and Austria.

And This ‘Happy Planet’ Survey Over Here Says…

Obviously this is not an exact science. It’s true in any ranking system that the creators’ biases will show in some way in the final product, and an index named the Happy Planet Index, calculated by the New Economics Foundation in 2009, is probably going to be a bit more loopy, touchy-feely than other more sober rankings.

Sure enough: According to the left-wing British journal The Guardian, the index seeks to rank nations by “combining measures of their ecological footprint with the happiness of their citizens,” totting up “how much of the Earth’s resources nations use and how long and happy a life their citizens enjoy as a result.”

Measuring happiness, of course, is about as subjective a metric as you can find. Under that system, however, Costa Rica comes out as “the greenest and happiest country in the world.”

Seeing as how the top 10 is dominated by countries from Latin America, and the United States ranks 114th, one can discern an obvious bias. Case in point: the highest-ranking Western country is The Netherlands, which doesn’t figure highly in anybody else’s green rankings, but does in rankings of socially liberal countries.

Costa Rica does rank highly for more objective ecological factors on other lists, so it’s not entirely political hackwork. Still, “finding” that the US, China and India “were all greener and happier 20 years ago than they are today” is clearly driven by a political agenda, especially when Saamah Abdallah, NEF researcher and the report’s lead author, says “the HPI suggests that the path we have been following is, without exception, unable to deliver all three goals: high life satisfaction, high life expectancy and ‘one-planet living’.”

Mr. Abdallah, it will be noted, does not live in Costa Rica, and is not planning to move there. Which raises a rather thorny question: If Costa Rica is the greenest, happiest place in the world to live, reporting “the highest life satisfaction in the world,” as the Happy Planet report says, then why aren’t more people moving there? Why don’t the report’s authors move there? If you did a report finding the most beautiful woman in the world with the greatest personality and she was available to you, wouldn’t you stick with her?

But Wait! There’s More!

And just to muddy the waters, along comes the National Geographic Society’sGreendex, a report on the greenest economies worldwide, which takes a different tack to the question.

The 2010 Greendex surveyed 17,000 people across 17 countries, probing consumer behavior in 65 areas such as housing, transportation, food and consumer goods. And the 2010 survey came up with names you probably wouldn’t find at the top of other greenest country lists — India, Brazil and China.

Porquoi? As Greendex officials explain it, “the three economies have seen a steady increase in environmentally sustainable consumer behavior over the last three years,” as concerns “recycling and re-using more, using public transportation more, buying more locally produced foods, less packaged foods and living in more environment friendly and energy-efficient housing.”

And strangely enough, greenie list stalwarts France ranked amongst the worst on the Greendex, with “consumers in Germany, Spain, Sweden, France and South Korea,” yes, even Sweden, ranked highly for greenie cred elsewhere, losing ground.

And the Final Contestant Is…

Ready for one more greenest country? Try Germany.

According to 2008 statistics compiled by BP and reported in The Telegraph, Germany is the greenest country for having cut its energy use by more than any other state in 2007.

“German use of oil, gas and coal in 2007 fell by 5.6 per cent compared with 2006, according to a new report from BP,” the Telegraph reported, adding that in the big picture, “global energy consumption, driven by China, America and India, rose by 2.4 per cent in the same year.”

That’s right, one man’s villain is another man’s hero.

Iceland, Finland, Germany, Costa Rica, India, it looks like New Zealand isn’t anybody’s idea of the greenest country in the world, unless you count ambition: In 2007 The Independent reported that then-New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark “pledged that her small nation will be the first in the world to wipe out its contribution to climate change.” Stay tuned.

But there is one metric by which New Zealand is unquestionably, absolutely the undisputed #1 green country on earth: Tonight is the opening of the Rugby World Cup in Auckland, and all Queen Street will be aslosh and knee-deep in green Steinlager bottles.

Take that, Iceland.

Just a couple of notes on context to supplement Grant's extremely useful and detailed responses to the questions, and solely because I have a copy of the Sinuhe text, which is the source of two of the questions:

          8.10 Xr zH n jb=k [n=k]
                This is part of a communication from the King of Egypt to Sinuhe in which he essentially pardons him for having gone AWOL and says "Come home, all is forgiven". It says that his deserting Egypt and traveling from country to country was OK because it was "subject to the advice of your heart to yourself". Allen omitted the final n=k, which would perhaps have made the quotation a bit clearer. So the sense is something like "According to what your heart advised you to do". or "According to the dictates of your heart" So there is a sense of actively following advice, but I don't think this is at all obvious from the bare quotation.

        8.11
              Here Sinuhe is describing how a marauding tribesman had planned to make off with (the actual word is HAq - "to plunder" but sometimes with the added sense of "carrying off"- see Faulkner p.163) his herds of cattle "under the tent of his tribe", so there seems to be a sense of motion towards. The idea of driving cattle into a tent seems a little far-fetched so it is quite likely that the tent is being used figuratively. in the sense of a corral or whatever. Another text of Sinuhe.apparently spells zH as in the previous quotation, but the idea of this barbaric chieftain following the advice of his tribe is a little too democratic to be plausible.
             Hardly essential knowledge at this stage, but I thought it might help to satisfy your curiosity.

8.10. Xr zH n jb.k - "taking the advice of your heart" or "taking the advice of your conscience"

QUESTION 1: The literal translation is "under the advice for your heart", which Allen translates as "with....", but this does not seem to me to convey the sense as given in the book for the preposition Xr. The sense I get is it is more like the English use of under in the phrase "under the advice of a doctor". I originally translated this exercise as "taking the advice of your heart" as "taking" implies that the advice is currently being used. In fact, you could even say "under the advice of your heart" in English. So, why is the "activeness" of being "under the advice" softened to being just "with the advice" in the answer?

I can't speak for Prof. Allen, but "under the advice of your heart" doesn't sound like idiomatic English to me, so if I were translating this I'd have to choose some other way of expressing what the Egyptian author meant by Xr. It's not clear to me, in any case, that Xr necessarily expresses the "activeness" that you see in it; I think we'd have to know a lot more about the nuances of Middle Egyptian usage before we could be sure that, in fact, "with" is an inappropriate (or "softened") translation of Xr in this phrase. Prof. Allen is an expert and has such knowledge, and furthermore he knows the context where this phrase originally appeared, so I'm (at least provisionally) willing to accept his interpretation, although I sometimes wish he were a bit fuller in his explanation of exercises such as this.

QUESTION 2: The phrase Xr zH n jb.k and Xr zH jb.k should mean exactly the same thing (according to what we've learned so far). So is it fair to presume that Allen used the indirect genitive in order to sucker-punch people like me who spent a lot of time figuring out that zH n jb.k is not a grammatical prepositional phrase?

I doubt Prof. Allen has much interest in delivering sucker punches. What he is interested in is providing exercises that both test and reinforce the knowledge that you will need to read Egyptian texts, and let me assure you the indirect genitive shows up all the time (more, I believe, than does the direct genitive).

8.11: Xr zH n wHjw.f - lit. "under the tent of his tribe"; Trans: "in the tent of his tribe"

(Allen = under the tent of his tribe)

QUESTION: Is Xr zH n wHjw.f to be interpreted simply as some guy in a physical tent belonging to his tribe, or could it be more abstract, such as "within the fold of his tribe". Something like how we might say "within the bosom of his family"?

Possibly, although the translations given in Faulkner's dictionary for zH all seem to be strictly literal. I think you'd have to look at the source text for this exercise to be sure. The Egyptians were not averse to metaphorical and idiomatic meanings, and many of them are surprisingly similar to English idioms (though, wouldn't you know it, I can't come up with an example just at the moment), so I wouldn't rule out your alternative interpretation entirely.

8.12: nfr n.f m hrw pn r sf -

Grammar

n.f: preposition+dep. pronoun: for him

hrw pn. noun + demonstr. pronoun masc. sing.: this day (today)

r sf: preposition + ?

Question: What kind of word is "sf"?

It's a noun. However, Allen points out (§8.14) that nouns of time can be used all by themselves as adverbs, and gives sf as an example. Whether it's being used adverbially in this sentence is an open question. Given that it's the object of the preposition r, you could say that it's nominal; on the other hand, it occupies a position in the sentence that's parallel to m hrw pn, so you could say it's adverbial. (Egyptian was actually somewhat less grammatically scrupulous in comparisons than English is.)

8.14: wr n=f irp r mw - He has more wine than water (More to him wine than water)

I suppose wr here is an adverb, as per 8.14, used in a comparative mode, thus being translated as more. But could it be an adjectival sentence with irp as the subject, as per 7.2. It would be nice to have everybody's opinion

This is an adjectival sentence. The literal meaning is something like "Wine is great to him in comparison to water", where "great" is a predicate describing "wine". From what I've seen, adverbs don't tend to occupy initial position in a sentence, and I'm not sure how you would parse this if you took wr to be adverbial.

8.15: ntf pw m mAat - lit. "It is him in the way things aught to be";

Trans: "It is him in maat"

(Allen = It is he, in truth - ie, It is really he)

QUESTION: I have strongly resisted translating "mAat" as just "truth", when Allen himself has included an entire essay about how mAat really means something more like "truth, justice, and the Egyptian way", so does this sentence not carry a much more authoritative declaration of the fact that it is "him"? I.e. more along the lines of "It is him, I swear by all that is sacred and holy on my mother's grave cross-my-heart-and-hope-to-die"?

mAat carries a lot of baggage, but then so can "truth" (think of Jesus' "I am the way, the truth, and the life"). Not every meaning a word can have needs to show up equally every time the word is used. Faulkner translates m mAat as "truly", so Prof. Allen is at least in good company.

Also, Allen gives the answer to this as "It is really he." Is that grammatical in English? Shouldn't we say "It is really him"?

Yes it is. Hyper-grammatical, in fact, in the sense that things like this are said exclusively by people who take their grammar very seriously indeed. The "he" in this sentence is what's known as a predicate nominative, so it makes a certain amount of sense that it be put in the nominative (or "subjective") case. The fact that most people wouldn't be caught dead saying "it is really he" doesn't change that.

8.16: r bw Xr(j) nTr -

Trans #1: (sentence fragment) "to the cemetery".

Trans #2: (sentence fragment) "to the tomb of the god"

QUESTION: Is there any reason to prefer one of these translations over the other? (The question refers to Trans #1 and #2, not Allen's translation.)

Mostly, context. In §8.9 Allen gives an example of a nisbe that can be read either "normally" or as a nfr Hr. His use of the word "normally" indicates that the direct nisbe is more frequent than the reverse (at least for his example, imy pr), so probably the thing to do would be to read Xr(j) nTr as in your translation #1 unless the context suggested otherwise.

8.18: HqA pw n rTnw Hrt - this ruler of Upper Retenu

Questions
1. pw: Allen translates "pw" as article "the", but only the -A - series of the demonstratives "...weakened to definite articles in the spoken language ..." (Allen 5.10 4). pw should still be a demonstrative, or?

No, he translates it as "he is". See §7.9. The article "the" is actually unexpressed in the Egyptian, but was supplied by the translator because English requires it. On the other hand, I've seen texts (e.g. Shipwrecked Sailor) where pn/tn is used in a way that suggests "the" rather than "this", so it may be going too far to say that only the -A series weakened. What is true is that it was the -A series that gave rise to the Late Egyptian definite article.

2. Hr: up (the sky determinative indicates to favor "up" to all other possible translations of Hr) I am not sure about this, can anybody comment?

Well, it indicates the nisbe, although 1) the nisbe just means "that which is upon", which can also be "chief, having authority" in addition to indicating physical or geographical "up"-ness, and 2) according to Faulkner the nisbe can appear without the sky determinative. What's really noteworthy here is that the word has a -t ending, which indicates that it's an adjective agreeing with rTnw, and so must be the nisbe.

3a. Hrt: is female of Hr, used because Retenu is a city (geographic area) -- correct or incorrect?

It's the feminine not of Hr (which, as a preposition, doesn't have a gender) but of the prepositional nisbe Hrj. You're right about rTnw.

3b. Are all country names feminine? Why is "rTnw" not written as "rTnwt" ?

Allen says (§4.4) "... proper names of places, such as countries and towns ... are often treated as feminine, regardless of their ending." This implies that not all are, but offhand I can't think of an exception. We'd have to know more about the etymology of rTnw (is it a native Egyptian word? a borrowing from a foreign language?) before we could know exactly why it looks the way it does.
